Guide to choosing a probiotic

Probiotics are a quick and easy way to improve the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut. Probiotics are live microorganisms, so you want to make sure that the product you are buying actually contains live microorganisms.

When choosing a probiotic, it is important to purchase from a reputable company who sells products that have been well researched. Look at the company’s website to ensure they are credible and have independent research supporting their claims and the ingredients in their products.

When looking at the label of a probiotic, consider these four things:

1. Probiotic Strains: The number of different strains is typically listed on the front of the bottle as well as in the ingredient list. The more strains the better. Some products limit the number of strains to only well-researched strains, which have been shown to have specific benefits. (See resources below)

2. Colony Forming Units (CFU): This is the unit used to measure the number of active or live organisms in your probiotic. The CFU is the number of live organisms that exist at the time you take the probiotic, not when it was manufactured.

3. Expiration Date: A quality probiotic supplement should have an expiration date. Even if they are stored properly, bacteria can't live forever. You want to know how many live microorganisms are in each serving or dose, which should be constant, as long as the product is not expired.

4. Proper Storage Conditions: Remember, probiotics are live organisms, so they require proper handling to maintain their potency. When you are purchasing in a store, take note of where and how the probiotic is being displayed. In general, refrigeration in a dry environment promotes stability, but not all probiotics need to be refrigerated to remain stable. Advancements in manufacturing and packaging have allowed companies the ability to package shelf-stable probiotics in a way that keep out heat, light, moisture and air. You should always check the company’s website and read the label to ensure you are storing your probiotic properly.

• If it was in the refrigerated section, it probably needs to be refrigerated after you bring it home.

• If it was bought off the shelf, read the label to see if it needs to be refrigerated after opening. Not all probiotics need to be refrigerated to remain stable. The advantage of shelf-stable probiotics is that they are great to take with you when you travel.

• If you are purchasing online, make sure you know how the manufacturer is shipping the product. Some of the bacteria in probiotics can be killed or damaged when it is being shipped in a hot truck for too long, or even when it sits in your mailbox on a hot day.

IBS and the LOWFODMAP Diet

 

IBS is certainly difficult and challenging to live with . Sometimes it can have a negative impact on someones different aspects of life.  Coping with pain, managing meals, bathroom issues, social life and family life all get affected in a way or another.  What is required is some adjustments to your daily routine, meal planning and prioritizing needs and self care. 

                                       

                                   What is IBS? 

IBS : Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one of a group of conditions called Functional gastrointestinal disorders, which is a very common gut disorder. Functional means that they cause disturbances in the FUNCTION of the gut but don't have any physical features such as ulcers , inflammation, lumps or abnormal blood tests. 

Many people with food allergies don't have IBS.  Food hypersensitivity can be an underlying problem , but the symptoms of IBS are most commonly triggered by a food intolerance. 

Before reaching out to food/diet alternatives, its very important to get diagnosed by a medical professional. As a health Coach I cant give precise guidance unless you have been evaluated by a doctor. 

Doctors usually look for red flags for example blood in the stool, weight loss, fever, family history and demand further investigation such as blood test and endoscopic examinations if necessary. If all those tests reveal no cause for your symptoms, then you will be diagnosed with IBS. 

                            What contributes to the development of IBS? 

  1.  Genetic factors : studies have shown that genes play a role in IBS. 
  2. Gut infections: some people develop IBS after being infected with a germ  ( Post-infectious IBS) which causes mild inflammation in the gut and anti inflammatory drugs dont work much. 
  3. stress: Nerve signals from the gut are interpreted in the brain which contribute to IBS. 
  4. Abnormal balance of gut bacteria such as : SIBO: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth which is the growth of too many bacteria in the small bowel . 

The Low-FODMAP Diet

1. Food intolerance

Food intolerance does not involve the immune system like food allergies. Food intolerances are the most common trigger for gut symptoms: they induce bowel distention by drawing in more fluid fermenting bowel bacteria, and they respond to foods that contain high levels of bio active substances & chemicals such as caffeine, colorings and preservatives. Those are indigestible sugars that are called FODMAPS: 

Fermentable: rapidly broken down by bacteria in the bowel 

Oligosaccharides: Fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides 

Disaccharides: Lactose 

Monosaccharides: Fructose 

And   Polyols: sugar alcohol such as Sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol 

FODMAPS cause symptoms of IBS because they are poorly absorbed in the small bowel, they cannot be broken down or they are slow to be absorbed, they force water into the gastrointestinal tract so this extra fluid causes diarrhea and gut disturbances. 

 

                              High Fructan Foods to avoid: 

  • Watermelon
  • Artichokes
  • Wheat based products
  • Chickpeas
  • Pistachio
  • Chamomile
  • Peaches
  • Garlic
  • Barley
  • Lentils
  • Cashews
  • Fennel tea
  • Onions
  • Rye
  • Soybeans

                                                                

High Lactose foods to avoid: 

  • Cows Milk ( whole and low fat) 
  • Ice cream, dairy based products, sweetened condensed milk
  • Full fat yogurt, 
  • Soft cheeses such as cottage, creme fraiche, ricotta. 

 

            High fructose & Polyol foods to avoid: 

  • Fruits such as apples, cherries, figs, mangoes, pears, blackberries, prunes 
  • Vegetables such as asparagus, artichokes, peas , cauliflower, mushrooms 
  • sweeteners such as agave nectar, high fructose corn syrup, honey, fruit juice concentrate
  •  All DIET, SUGAR FREE or LOW CARB labelled foods such as gums, mints, candy
  • Additives such as sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, Xylitol, ismomalt . 

 

What can i eat? 

Here's a list of of the low lactose , fructose and polyol foods: 

  • Lactose free yogurts
  • Hard cheese such as brie, blue, cheddar, emmental, feta, gruyere
  • Avocados, bananas, cranberries, grapefruit, kiwi, oranges, papaya, strawberries, tomatoes,melon, lemon, lime, raspberries
  • Sweeteners such as maple syrup, molasses, peanut butter

You should eat no more than one serving of fruits per meal (  one cup of cut up fruit such as an orange or banana) You can eat many fruits servings a day but allow 2 to 3 hours between each serving. 

Fats and oils don't contain FODMAPs, same for animal based foods such as meat, fish, chicken, and eggs. plant based protein foods such as legumes do have FODMAPS so its important to follow the guidelines. 

Avoid eating wheat , rye and barley in large quantities. remember moderation is key! if you have had a food intolerance test you should be able to know whether you are intolerant to wheat and rye products. Alternatives to wheat and other FODMAPS are: 

  • Gluten free bread and pasta 
  • wheat free fruit muesli 
  • Oatmeal 
  • rice flakes 
  • Buckwheat 
  • Chia seeds
  • corn
  • Millet 
  • quinoa 
  • potatoes 
  • flowerless cakes
  • Popcorn
  • wild rice 
  • buckwheat soba noodles 

What can I snack on? 

Snacking between meal is very important for IBS sufferers.  Here are a few snack ideas: 

  • Fresh fruits such as banana, blueberries, cranberries, grapefruit, grapes, kiwi, passion fruit; but limit it to one piece or a small handful at a time. 
  • Vegetables such as carrots, bell pepper, cucumber 
  • Gluten free rice cakes with a suitable  cheese topping 
  • Peanut butter, chicken, fish, eggs
  • Lactose free yogurt
  • Small amount of nuts excluding pistachios or cashews  

                          Gluten free & Celiac Disease 

It is not necessary to follow an entire gluten free diet, only if you have celiac disease as it helps improve the condition of the small bowel lining and gastrointestinal symptoms.  People with celiac disease suffer from inflammation in the small intestine, that's why they opt for a complete gluten free diet for life. IBS is not related to injury of the bowel, So the low FODMAP is advised.   Its also important to read all labels of packaged food and check for gluten, not all gluten free foods are LOWFODMAP .

Its also recommended to avoid all colors of onions , even if its present in small amounts as those are major trigger for IBS symptoms. When you are purchasing stocks, soups, chips, rice crackers read the label well and check if onions are in the ingredient list. 

A low-FODMAP diet is not a gluten free diet. Gluten free foods don't contain wheat, rye, barley so they can be suitable for people on the lowFODMAP diet. However, you can still include barley ,wheat and rye in your diet but in small quantities and in moderation. On the other hand, you should note that many gluten free foods contain FODMAPs, such as apples , pears, and legumes, so make sure you are making wise decisions regarding your food choices. 

How do I start? 

It is recommended that you start the LowFODMAP diet by avoiding ALL FODMAPS for at least 2 months. Once your symptoms improve, you can gradually reintroduce one FODMAP at a time to see if you tolerate it. This is  recommended to do along a nutritionist/health coach to track your symptoms and help you with meal plans. 

You might find this very difficult or overwhelming.  Some people find it hard to cope with, there is a lot you can do to help yourself:

  1. keep a food diary: write down your plan for the day: where are you going to be and what food will be available? 
  2. When you start the LowFODMAP diet, keep track and write down everything that you have eliminated and how are you feeling on daily basis. 
  3. Write down every food you gradually consume and whether it has affected you. 
  4.  Managing new food and lifestyle changes: Exercise, meditation, yoga, walk in nature, and practicing self care play a big role in feeling your best on daily basis.

Depression

      What is  depression and how can you help people  suffering ? 

According to research and science, Depression is a common mood disorder which becomes serious if left untreated.  It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, interact with people and handle daily activities. Sleeping, eating and working disrupt your quality of life. 

Depression can affect anyone, but when the symptoms last for more than 2 weeks, it should be addressed. We all know depression can strike anyone, we might be even feeling down, stressed, anxious for a couple of days.. but when we are surrounded with supportive friends and family, and get to the root cause of it, healing is easy. 

                     What symptoms should i look out for ? 

Depression becomes a disorder when you are unable to get out of bed, don't care about your favorite hobby..you might feel like you are just a ghost of a human body.. feeling hopeless , irritable, restless and disconnected from the world. 

Common symptoms are: 

  • Mood swings 
  • Unexplainable body aches 
  • Digestive Problems 
  • Changes in appearance 
  • Sadness 
  • Fatigue 
  • Loss of appetite/overeating 
  • Substance Abuse 
  • Guilt 
  • Withdrawal 
  • Isolation 

                             But what causes depression? 

It's often said that depression results from a chemical imbalance, but science suggests that its not only having too much or too little brain chemicals. There are many other causes such as nutritional deficiencies, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, traumas, post traumatic stress, hormonal imbalances, medications, and underlying medical problems that we are not aware of.   

Sometimes certain food allergies /sensitivities cause brain fog, the symptoms are similar to depression. Having an IgG food allergy test can be helpful in understanding which food causes gut distress.  Brain allergy from certain food allergies such as gluten, milk and eggs are common allergens which wear down the stress hormone. 

Treatment should not be delayed, there is a lot of help available ! There are a variety of treatments such as psychotherapy ( Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) which helps you get to the root cause of your disorder , change your thoughts and the way you perceive the world. 

                                What can I do about it? 

  1. Visit your GP, address your concerns and talk about your thoughts and feelings. It's very important to have blood work done and check for nutritional deficiencies:  FULL Thyroid check, iron, B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin D, hormone check : they are play a big role in fluctuating stress hormones in your body. 
  2. Ask to be referred to a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist : practicing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps you get to the root cause of your concern .
  3. If you have been advised to take medications, make sure your understand the side effects and take supplements with it under the supervision of your doctor. Medication AND CBT work very well together. Don't forget to exercise daily!
  4. Manage your food/lifestyle habits: changing your relationship with food and lifestyle helps heal depression. There are so many holistic factors that contribute to depression such as: relationships, spirituality, home environment, exercise, work life balance etc.. ask yourself: WHAT IS BEYOND MY PLATE?  Do certain relationships put you down? Does your career make you feel GUILTY  for not spending time with your family? Do you have enough time to prepare home made meals? WHAT IS ONE NON NEGOTIABLE TASK YOU NEED TO PERFORM EVERYDAY FOR YOUR OWN WELL-BEING? 
  5. The help of and guidance of a health coach can greatly help you in managing your food and lifestyle habits!

Five important primary foods you need in your life right now

Food in our life comes in different forms. Primary food and secondary food. Both of them complete each other. Primary food is what’s beyond our plate, healthy relationships, fulfilling career, daily exercise, and spirituality. They play a role in feeding our hunger for life. When we balance our primary foods, life begins to feed you, hence what you eat becomes secondary.

Sometimes we are fed not by food but by the energy in our lives. These moments and feelings demonstrate that everything is food. Secondary food is the food on our plate such as proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables etc.. Whenever you aren’t feeling healthy, or something is feeling “off”, it could be the result of an imbalance.

An imbalance of either your primary or your secondary foods – anything that isn’t going go right in our life such as our careers or relationships – can lead to changes in mood and in the cravings that we experience during the day, which can lead to digestive, physical and mental problems.  

Here’s a look at five primary foods you need in your life now. Which ones do you think you need to work on?

Relationships: The quality of our relationships explains a lot about the quality of our life and our health. It’s important to cultivate relationships that are healthy and support your individual needs and desires.

Friendships: Today most people are spending a large amount of time on media, tv, apps, etc.. Having high quality friendships add meaning to life. You can determine which kind of people you allow to stay or let go of, or give them less of your energy. Maintain your quality friendships while at the same time clearing space for new people to come into your life. Remember, friendship is primary food and it should nourish you!

Physical activity: Our bodies thrive on movement and without it, it degenerates. A 30-minute walk every day may be all you need to keep yourself in shape. Making physical activity is an easy daily habit. There are many kinds of physical activities you can take part in. Different people require different types of exercise and needs will change with time. Activities ranging from Pilates, rock climbing, surfing, etc.. The options are endless!

Career: Our lives improve a lot when we do the work that we love. Think about your current job, your likes and dislikes of what you do every day. Finding work you love is essential to living a healthy balanced life.

Spirituality: Spiritual nutrition can feed us and hence diminish cravings for the superficial rewards of life. Daily meditation, reading religious texts, walking in nature helps you develop a spiritual openness.

What are your cravings trying to tell you?

Whenever you find yourself reaching for something you know is not good for you, take a moment to slow down and reevaluate the situation. Consider what your body is asking for; check out the flavour:

                                                    Something Sweet? 

Try to satisfy your desire with less extreme food that doesn’t contain refined white sugar. Eating a lot of sweet vegetables will satisfy your natural cravings for sweet foods . Quality makes a big difference; if you decide to have an extreme sweet food try to choose the best quality you can buy; eat the food consciously, chew it slowly & enjoy it. Try to indulge in a small piece of organic dark chocolate. There are plenty of organic chocolate with great flavors such as ginger and lime.

 

                                                  Something salty? 

Cravings for salty food often indicate mineral deficiency. Salt contains 60 different trace minerals which is the basis for the formation of vitamins, enzymes and proteins. Table salt has been refined and doesn’t contain much minerals. Try to satisfy your craving with a variety of vegetables which are high in minerals. A good tip is purchasing a high quality sea salt which has natural salty flavor and is high in minerals.

Something bitter?

 Bitter foods enhance digestion, so craving something bitter may be a craving for something nutritious . some people satisfy their bitter cravings by drinking coffee or beer. Try eating dark leafy vegetables as such mustard greens, kale , collards , spinach & arugula;  which are high in fiber and keep your colon healthy and in proper working order.

Spicy food? Processed food sits on the shelves for a long time ,lacks in vitality & includes  added fat and cholesterol. Circulation slows down, and blood becomes thick hence the organs and extremities become cool. At this point the body starts craving spices.  Foods such as Mexican and pizzas  warm the body but create lots of stressful energy.  Instead you can add to your food the most popular choices such as cayenne pepper and hot pepper sesame oil. Add them to your stir fires or salads to kick off your cravings.

Something” Liquid”? Ask yourself if you have been eating an excessive amount of salty foods or dry baked flour products. You might be feeling dry and tight. Symptoms of chronic dehydration include headaches and urology problems. Instead of quenching thirst with sugary and caffeinated beverages, try drinking water at least 3 times a day. Keep a bottle with you and sip it through the day and notice how your body responds.

Physical health is the foundation of our lives. When you learn to deconstruct your cravings you can reclaim a sense of balance and harmony .
